Grey's most vocal hallucinations, the Shadows mimic his appearance only so far as shape. Completely black, they lack much substance but at times appear to be quite solid. Grey is the only one who they appear to be able to physically move, which would make sense as they are more or less an aspect of himself.
The shadows embody the internal dialogue most people share with themselves, only to the hyper-aggressive and frantic pace of Grey's mind. They are not alternate personalities, they are all Grey. They all know of one another and Grey knows of all of them...And there are quite a few things about himself that bother him as well as ways of thinking he hasn't used in a long time.
The shadows appear in different forms according to Grey's current atire and there is more than one in existance. Certain shadows may exhibit certain characteristics, but their differences are often difficult to pick out. They are what are left of a normal being inside Grey, and often express frustration or cynicism at their inability to handle reality as they would if they (Grey) were sane.
Any thought or comment voiced by a Shadow is actually a thought Grey himself has- even if he may not be able to agree with or reconcile himself to that thought immediately.
